
Do we judge people by how popular they are or by how much they've accomplished in the world? Or do we simply assume the people we see on TV are the people who come from those countries, the ones where we think life is a fairytale and everyone can be an actor, or a singer, or a model?
However, equality of opportunity still doesn't exist anywhere, probably. And, while the world's mainstream media might be focused on those parts of the world implied, one needs only to raise their head a little bit and see that talent and hard work know no nationality. Here is a list of South African talented and hardworking women who turned heads all their life.
Louise Barnes - "Surviving Evil"

Though Louise Barnes is mostly famous in South Africa, we doubt that she'll be facing any financial issues in retirement, when that time comes. To this day, most people know her from her appearance in the 2009 film "Surviving Evil," a movie produced in South Africa. Americans usually remember her from her time in "Black Sails," where she portrayed Miranda Barlow.
Barnes's most recent on-screen appearance was in 2019 when she played in some episodes of "NCIS." Her filmography is not that big, her acting prowess is widely recognized. Where do you think we'll catch up with her next?
Yolandi Visser - Die Antwoord

Everybody probably remembers the first time they ever saw this striking blonde on TV. Besides her hairstyle, Yolandi Visser is also known worldwide through the male/female duo group called Die Antwoord, where she is a vocalist. Her real name is Anri du Toit, and she was born in South Africa in 1984.
Anri's co-vocalist from Die Antwoord was also her love interest, and his name is Watkin Tudor Jones, known as Ninja. The duo's relationship was one of the group's main appeals, but they continued to work even after the split. They have a daughter together, born in 2005, while Anri adopted three more kids.
Charlize Theron - "Mad Max: Fury Road"
Charlize Theron is an actress, often counted among the most beautiful women in the world, with or without makeup. She was born in South Africa in 1975. After some modeling in Europe, Ms. Charlize fully turned to acting in 1995. Her rise to fame came in 1997 with her role in "The Devil's Advocate."
Today, she is also known for roles in "Monster," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "Tully," "Snow White and the Huntsman," and many more. She is also an accomplished producer, having worked on "Mindhunter" and "Hyperdrive" TV shows, as well as many more projects. Charlize produced "The Old Guard" film released in 2020.
Caron Bernstein - "Operation Midnight Climax"

Caron Bernstein hails from South Africa, where she was born in 1984. As a teen, she showed interest in painting but quickly turned to modeling and worked with Ford Models. In her 20s, Caron switched to music, and she soon had three record deals with some of the major labels.
She is also an actress of some renown, appearing in movies like "Operation Midnight Climax" and "Grand Champion." Finally, Caron's passion for painting returned later in her career, and she now works on dark subjects, capturing portraits of suicide victims and the likes. She is married and a mother of one, currently living and working in New York City.
Sasha Pieterse - "Pretty Little Liars"

Best known for her role in the acclaimed TV show "Pretty Little Liars," Sasha Pieterse-Sheaffer started her acting career when she was only 4. She appeared in commercials at first, like in a Wanner Bread Products advertisement when she was 5, and also had modeling jobs.
She was seen in many magazines like "TeenProm," "Seventeen," BELLO's "Young Hollywood," and more. Sasha got her first role on a TV show, "Family Affair," when she was 6, while her most recent appearance was in a few episodes of "Epic Night." Sasha reprised her role in all "Pretty Little Liars" spin-offs.
Shannon Esra - "Lioness"

Shannon Esra is an acclaimed actress and singer from South Africa, known to worldwide audiences for her roles in "The Triangle," "Salaam-e-Ishq," and "I Dreamed of Africa." Like all beautiful women on this list, she too was born in South Africa in 1984, and she entered professional acting when she was 16.
At that age, she debuted in the mentioned "I Dreamed of Africa" (2000), which starred Kim Basinger. Shannon continued to study acting and later on won several awards for various performances, while she also had success on stage, like in Six Inches and Homebound productions. She currently stars in the "Lioness" TV show.
Leleti Khumalo - "Sarafina!"

Leleti Khumalo was born in 1970, and she is an actress best known for her roles in "Sarafina!," "Hotel Rwanda," and "Invictus." TV audiences also know her from "Imbewu: The Seed" soap opera, where she starred in 2018 and 2019. Leleti's career started all the way back in the 80s.
At that time, she was auditioning for Mbongeni Ngema, an acclaimed writer and producer from South Africa, and he not only included Leleti in what was to become his future international blockbuster success, Sarafina!, but the title character of Sarafina was written for her. Leleti was married to Ngema, but she is currently married to Skhutazo Winston Khanyile, with whom she has twins.
Suanne Braun - "Stargate SG-1"

Suanne Braun is a London-based actress, born in South Africa, of course, in 1968, where she started her career. She firstly worked on TV and stage, and she was a host of the "Bon Voyage" show, with which she traveled to 36 different countries and won the excellence in television award.
At the height of her television fame, sometime in the mid-90s, Suanne went to work in the USA. She later became known to USA audiences for roles in the "Stargate SG-1 TV" show and movies like "The Princess Switch" and its 2020 sequel, "Summer of Rockets," and others.
Bonnie Mbuli - "Catch a Fire"

Bonnie Mbuli appeared on TV for the first time when she was only 13 years old. She was cast for the "Viva Families" TV series in 1992 after being discovered by an agent at a bus stop. After that, Bonnie quickly became a TV regular, appearing on magazine programs like "Zapmag," "Teleschool," "Limits Unlimited," and many more.
In the early 00s, she was cast for the "Gaz'lam" TV series, and her acting career took off from there. She was in "Drum," "Catch a Fire," "Invictus," and other movies. Bonnie was most recently seen in "Family Time," a short movie in 2021, and in the "Vagrant Queen" TV show in 2020.
Terry Pheto - "Tsotsi"

Born Moitheri Pheto, Terry received her international acclaim with her debut role in "Tsotsi," which is a 2005 movie adaptation of the eponymous novel written by Athol Fugard. After that, she was in "Catch a Fire," "A United Kingdom," "Goodbye Bafana," "How to Steal 2 Million," and more movies.
Terry also worked on TV a lot and is known to audiences from "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "Madiba" TV shows. She was most recently seen in "Faces" in 2018. In 2008, L'Oreal chose Terry as their new face, and she was featured in many beauty magazines afterward. Her role in "Tsotsi" won her a South African Film and Television Award for best-supporting actress.
Thishiwe Ziqubu - "Tell Me Sweet Something"

Thishiwe Ziqubu was born in 1985, and she is a well-known South African movie director, actor, and writer. She is the winner of the 2016 Africa Movie Academy Awards for her supporting role in "Tell Me Sweet Something," an internationally acclaimed South African movie.
Among others, Thishiwe is also known for roles in "Hard to Get," "While You Weren't Looking," "Blood Psalms" TV series, and more. She has directed several episodes of the "Shuga" TV show in 2019 and has worked as a writer occasionally.
Nomzamo Mbatha - "Coming 2 America"

Among the many talents South Africa has given to the world is Nomzamo Mbatha, a young actress who managed to stand out not only in showbiz but also as a human rights activist. She was born in 1990 and has been active on the scene since 2012.
She first attracted wide attention when she starred in "Tell Me Sweet Something" and as a host of a show called "Holiday Swap." Nomzamo has represented Neutrogena since 2015, which is an American skin care company owned by Johnson & Johnson, and audiences have also seen her in "Coming 2 America," 2021.
Ayanda Thabethe - "Top Billing"

Dubbed as "the formidable entrepreneur" on her eponymous website, Ayanda Thabethe is a model, a TV host, and a multiple famous brand ambassador. She is also a University of Pretoria and University of South Africa graduate and has worked for such brands as L'Oreal and Johnson & Johnson, among others.
Her career in entertainment mostly consists of her TV work. Ayanda has hosted the internationally acclaimed TV show "Top Billing," where she explores the lifestyles of famous people around the world. She also runs her own marketing agency called Buzzworthy and contributes greatly to the alleviation of poverty in her home country.
Enhle Mbali Maphumulo - "Lace"

Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa is a South African actress and TV presenter who started her career in showbiz in 2004. She was born in 1988 and has had her breakthrough in "Tshisa," a TV show that airs since 2006. Enhle was also on Myunzini.com, "iNkaba," "Soul City," "Rhythm City," and many more.
She was also the host of the "Young, Gifted and Black" TV series on Channel O and some other programs. The most successful project she participated in was probably the short movie titled Lace, which won several awards, among which was Mlotshwa's international Best Actress Award at Filmapalooza 2019. Enhle is also a fashion designer, and she has her own maternity wear line called Se Preggoz.
DJ Zinhle - "Jika Majika"

Real name Ntombezinhle Jiyane, DJ Zinhle is an accomplished DJ for sure, but also a producer, a businesswoman, and a media personality as well. She is active in entertainment since around 2004, and her first big break came when she got to be the resident DJ on the "Jika Majika" dance show, airing on SABC 1.
Later on, Jiyane worked with famous stars from the South African music scene and has even won the Best House Female Artist and Best House DJ awards through various festivals and appearances. She co-hosted the "1's and 2's" talent competition show on Sabc 1 in 2021.
Bonang Matheba - "B*Dazzled"

Bonang Matheba is a well-known presenter from South African television, but she is also a radio personality, a producer, philanthropist, model, and a businesswoman. Her trademarks are her signature voice and flamboyant presenting style, as she is known internationally as the first black woman from South Africa that was featured in top-tier beauty magazines.
Bonang has her own reality show "B*Dazzled," while she was the host of the pre-show for the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards. In 2017, Bonang published her written work, "From A to B," and has launched another reality show titled Being Bonang. Most recently, she hosted the Miss South Africa 2019 beauty pageant.
Unathi Nkayi - "Popstars"

Unathi Nkayi was born in 1978 and she is widely considered to be a South African media mogul. She started her career as a co-host of "Popstars" TV show, which was followed up by the role of a judge on the singing competition talent show called Idols.
Unathi was also seen on "Castle Loud," where she was also a co-producer, and she also worked on the radios YFM, Pop Stars, Kaya FM, and Metro FM. Unathi's former husband is Thomas Msengana, a radio personality popularly called Bad Boy T. They have two kids together. Unathi was recently featured in the media, making her stand against social media bullying after a user commented on her looks.
Minnie Dlamini - "Live Amp Friday"

Minnie Dlamini, real name Minenhle Jones, is best-known as an on-air personality, but also for her acting and modeling work. She began her career in entertainment in 2010 and right around that time, she was selected to be the presenter for the "Live Amp Friday" music show that airs on SABC 1.
However, Minnie was already working as a presenter while she was at the University of Cape Town, sometime earlier in 2010. Later on, around 2013, she turned to sports broadcasting and has co-hosted the "Soccerzone" show, and she has since co-hosted many important public events, like the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards and South African Film and Television Awards.
Mynie Grové - "Ek Verlang Nog Altyd"

Mynie Grové is an acclaimed singer from South Africa. She is also a composer and songwriter, and she rose to fame with her songs "Ek Verlang Nog Altyd" and "Soar Like an Eagle," but also with children's songs "Tein Klein Paddatjies" and "Pinocchio."
Mynie is a regular at international music events and festivals, where she represents her home country, particularly in South America, Portugal, and Europe. Audiences who like to watch the "Idols" TV show know her as the judge in 2006 edition of the competition, alongside Deon Maas and Taliep Petersen.
Khanyi Mbau - "The Scoop"

Khanyisile Mbau was born in 1985, in Soweto, and she is a prominent actress, artist, and TV host. She is active in entertainment since 2004 and her rise to fame came with a role on "Muvhango" that same year. She was also on "Mzansi" in 2006 and on After 9 in 2007 that both aired on SABC 1.
Mbau was quickly established as a TV regular and in the 2010s she was in various reality series and talk shows. As far as movies go, Mbau was in "Happiness is a Four-letter Word" and a few more. She is hosting a SABC 3 popular show called "The Scoop" as of 2018.
Connie Ferguson - "The Queen"

Constance Ferguson, better known as Connie, is a world-famous actress born in Botswana in 1970. She began her career in the mid-'90s and is known to audiences from the popular TV show "Generations," where she was a regular from its inception in 1994 until 2010. Connie reprised her role of Karabo Moroka on that show once again in 2014.
She was also seen in "Soul City," "Comedy Central Roaster," "Strictly Come Dancing," and more. However, Connie is probably best known to western audiences for her lead role in the ongoing TV series "The Queen" and she is also currently in "Rockville."
Nadia Nakai - "Bragga"

You might not know much about Nadia Nakai Kandava yet, but the South African hip-hop artist is about to take on the world. After studying Marketing and Media Studies, Nakai ventured into music in 2013. Her first album titled "Bragga" was an instant hit, with Nakai naming rapper Nazizi as one of her biggest influences.
Nakai released her second and most recent album in 2017, titled "Nadia Na*ed." She's dreamt of making money from music since she appeared on "Shiz Niz," the famous hip-hop TV show. She hasn't announced anything about her next album release, but we're pretty sure it's going to be as spectacular as the previous records.
Kate Liquorish - "Queen Sono"

Kate Liquorish is one of the most talented South African actresses, and she's proven that many a time, both on stage and on the silver screen. Currently, you can catch up with her on Netflix's "Queen Sono," while she's been awarded for her work in "Still Breathing," back in 2020.
Apart from television, Liquorish has appeared in acclaimed films such as "Eye In the Sky," where she co-starred alongside Helen Mirren. She keeps most of her personal life away from tabloid cameras. However, her Instagram account indicates that in September 2021, she welcomed her first child, a son named Felix.
Yvonne Chaka Chaka - "Umqombothi"

People call Yvonne Chaka Chaka the Princess of Africa, and this is no coincidence. For decades now, Chaka Chaka has been a powerhouse in the African music industry, while she's also collaborated with international stars such as Bono, Annie Lennox, and even Queen! She released her latest album, called "Celebrate Life," back in 2006.
Nowadays, Chaka Chaka is mostly involved in humanitarian causes, while she managed to look as glimmering as she did when she was in her 20s, even with no makeup on. Just imagine that Nelson Mandela wanted her to be his first ambassador for his children humanitarian organization!
Moonchild Sanelly - "Rabulapha!"

Sanelisiwe Twisha probably never dreamed she would become so famous growing up. Nowadays, people know her as Moonchild Sanelly, and she's currently one of the hottest names in the African music industry, while she's also a huge feminine symbol, with or without makeup. In 2015, she released her debut studio album called "Rabulapha!."
Since then, she's managed to collaborate with superstars such as Beyonce, while Die Antwoord decided to offer her a chance to open for them during their 2018 European tour. Sanelly claims that she's created a new music genre, called "Future Ghetto Punk."
Sho Madjozi - "Limpopo Champions League "

Sho Madjozi's talent in music is beyond doubt. Madjozi has managed to incorporate Tsonga culture elements in her hip-hop sounds. As she claims, she's very proud of being part of the Tsonga people, and she usually performs with traditional clothes on. In 2017, she released her debut studio album called "Limpopo Champions League."
Since then, she's become quite popular in the African music scene, and she get more and more famous each day. Her latest work came in 2020, when she debuted her mixtape called "What A Life," featuring numerous acclaimed African artists.
Tierra Whack - "Whack World"

Tierra Helena Whack has been in the music game since 2017, but she's already managed to gain attention. Initially, Whack performed under the nickname "Dizzle Dizz," until she later released her first single Mumbo Jumbo. It was in 2017 that we got to listen to her debut album called "Whack World."
Apart from increasing her earnings, the said album also made her a star overnight. We got her latest single titled "Link" in 2021, and we can't wait for her next work. Whack also writes poetry, which, as she claimed, helps her cope with her negative thoughts.
Pearl Thusi - "Queen Sono"

Born Sithembile Xola Pearl Thusi, Ms. Thusi is primarily an actress, but also a model and a presenter. She is perhaps best known to HBO and BBC television audiences that watched "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" comedy series, but she was also on "Quantico" and others.
As far as movies go, Thusi was in "Catching Feelings," "Bulletproof 2," and she is to be seen in "Wu Assassins: Fistful of Vengeance." She is currently a series regular on "Queen Sono." According to online data, Thusi was never married, but she does have two kids.
Musetta Vander - "Maxim Cover"

Musetta Vander might be 58 years old, but her image, even without any beauty products on, will make your jaw drop. Must be her skincare secrets, we guess. Vander kickstarted her acting career back in the '90s. Since then, she's managed to appear in numerous TV series, with her more recognizable roles being the ones in "NCIS" and "Hawaii Five-0."
Vander has also had a very lucrative career as a model, having graced magazines such as "Maxim" and "Details". We haven't seen her on-screen since 2017. Hopefully, she won't retire yet, as she looks as glamorous as ever.
Caren Pistorius - "Slow West"

Caren Pistorius is a household name in the acting industry back in her home country of South Africa. In fact, she also comes from New Zealand. We got to know her when she appeared in the 2013 TV series "The Blue Rose." However, it was in 2015 that she rose to stardom, with her portrayal of Rose Ross in the film "Slow West."
Pistorius is now just 26 years old, and she's got plenty of time to broaden her acting portfolio. In 2020, she appeared in the acclaimed thriller film "Unhinged," while she's expected to play in the upcoming film "The Marsh King's Daughter."
Glynis Johns - "Mary Poppins"

We bet you can recognize this lady, even when she's got no makeup on! Glynis Johns is one of Britain's finest actresses, and one of the most talented women as well, being an actress, a singer, and a musician. She's managed to make a lot of money both from stage plays and from her silver-screen appearances. To this day, she's mostly recognized for her role as Winifred Banks in "Mary Poppins."
Johns is now 98 years old, and after four marriages and three divorces, she stands as one of the last remaining stars from Hollywood's Golden Era. We last saw her perform back in the 1999 film "Superstar."
Jodi Balfour - "Bomb Girls"

Despite coming from South Africa, Jodi Balfour made most of her money in Canada. Back in 2012, she landed her breakthrough role of Gladys Witham in the popular series "Bomb Girls," while she also reprised her role in the show's sequel "Bomb Girls: Facing The Enemy."
For her work, Balfour managed to win a Canadian Screen Award. She is still making great progress in showbiz and we're pretty sure great things are on the way for her. If you want to catch up with her, she now appears on "For All Mankind" in Apple TV+.
Jessica Marais - "Packed To The Rafters"

Jessica Dominique Marais has already managed to get herself some pretty hefty paychecks thanks to her successful acting career. Most people probably recognize her from her appearance in popular TV series such as "Packed To The Rafters" and "Magic City" and "Chasing Wonders."
Marais, who was born in South Africa, doesn't mind taking her makeup off to flaunt her gorgeous characteristics and natural beauty. James Stewart, who used to be her partner from 2009 to 2015, truly lost a gem.
Candice Swanepoel - Victoria's Secret Angel

Candice Swanepoel is definitely one of the most famous stars on our list, and surely one of the wealthiest. She's been a Victoria's Secret Angel since 2010, with "Forbes" reporting that Swanepoel is also one of the highest-earning models at the moment. No wonder she's not afraid to get caught without makeup on!
Since 2018, Swanepoel has also been promoting her own swimwear collection titled Tropic of C. She's been spending most of her time between Brazil and New York, having made deals with renowned magazines such as "GQ" and "Harper's Bazaar."
Belle Delphine - Most Famous E-Girl

Since then, it seems that she hasn't been as active as she once was in the showbiz. Maybe the fact that she got married to former NFL player Tim Tebow has to do something with it. Could it be family time for Nel-Peters?
Princess Charlene of Monaco - Olympic Swimmer

Did you know that Charlene, Princess of Monaco, was actually born in Zimbabwe? We bet you didn't. She managed to make her own money from being an Olympic Swimmer and a South-African champion. Her retirement from swimming came back in 2007. She's now 43 years old and married to Prince Albert II.
Sadly, in October 2021, Princess Charlene had to undergo surgery, following some implications she faced with her heart. Reports claim that she's now fully recovering, and we can't wait to see her healthy and glimmering once again.
Cariba Heine - "A Model Daughter: The Killing Of Caroline Byrne"

Cariba Heine might have filled up her bank account by being a prominent actress, but she made her first steps towards stardom as a dancer. She mostly danced contemporary, jazz dance, and classical ballet. It was in 2006 that she decided to take a shot at acting, and it proved to be a wise choice.
People now recognize her from her appearances in "H20: Just Add Water," "Blue Water High," and especially from her role in "A Model Daughter: The Killing Of Caroline Byrne." Her last acting work was in 2020 when she played in "The Secrets She Keeps," a popular Australian TV series.

Sibongile Mlambo is probably Zimbabwe's most famous actress, though she's currently based in the United States. You've definitely watched her flaunt her acting skills in Netflix's "Lost In Space," which is the most acclaimed series she's appeared in so far. She started playing in the series in 2018 and she's managed to become a star.

Lauren Brant - Hi-5

Even if you haven't seen Lauren Brant before (especially without makeup), you've definitely heard her sing. Brant became famous for having been a member of Hi-5, the renowned children's music group. Before that, she had taken a shot at acting, having appeared in "H20: Just Add Water" and other TV series of her time.

She is an actress, a TV host, and a model, but western audiences probably best know her for her appearance on TV shows like "Life Is Wild," "Task Force," "Taryn & Sharon," and "Shadow."
Amanda was also in several movies, like "10 Days in Sun City," "Between Friends: Ithala," and "Slay," She also had a notable performance on the TV show "Skeem Saam," popular in South Africa, while she is currently seen on "Isono."
